Is acupuncture safe? Yes acupuncture is safe as long as your practitioner is qualified and insured. As I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I have completed a thorough training in acupuncture and appropriate western medical sciences. I also must observe a strict code of practice which lays down stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation for needles and other equipment. These procedures have been approved by the Department of Health.
What does it feel like? An acupuncture needle is very fine and when it is inserted, it is often felt like a numbness or a tingling sensation.
Do I need to be ill to have acupuncture? Not at all. Acupuncture and massage are excellent therapies used to keep maintaining a good health and simply being well! Their benefits go beyond just relieving a particular condition. In many cases, they increases the energy, improve the appetite, the sleep and the general well being.
Do I need to do anything before the treatment? Not particularly. Just remember to bring your list of medication if you take any, and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
Do I need to do anything after the treatment? Acupuncture affects people in different ways. Be aware that you may feel tired after a treatment especially if you never had acupuncture before. It's strongly recommended not to drink alcohol after a treatment as this may negate the efficacy of the treatment.
Should I let my doctor know? If you are taking prescribed medication, it is sensible to inform your GP that you are having acupuncture. In the first consultation, please bring your medical details.
What if I am using other alternatives remedies? Acupuncture works well alongside most complementary therapies. However it is a good idea to inform all practitioners about the treatments you are having.
Is there anything your practitioner needs to know? It's important to let me know if You take medicine. Please bring the medical details at the first consultation You have ever experienced a fit, faint or funny turn You have a pacemaker or any other electrical implants You have a bleeding disorder You are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication You have damaged heart valves You have any other particular risk of infection
